I pretty much died waiting for this book. Elixir did help hold me over, but still. I DIED. Luckily, this book is worth dying for.

These characters...they just keep growing. Alex has grown SO MUCH throughout these books. It makes me happy just to think about. She's still snarky and amusing, but she's not really annoying to me anymore. Aiden's still Aiden, perfectly swoon-worthy. And Seth...as this series goes on, I miss the old Seth more and more. I do love him. So much. But he doesn't act like he did when I started loving him, and I hope so hard that he redeems himself. Even if he doesn't, I'll still be on his team. It will just hurt me a lot. BUT, on the bright side, I did feel that when we saw him in this one that he showed potential for not breaking my heart in Sentinel. So there's that.

Oh, and Apollo. Ha, Apollo. He needs a bell.

The plot of this one...I think the biggest thing I need to say is that it didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would for Alex to break Seth's hold and go back to being ALEX. That was something I worried about, because how can anything that makes me happy happen when she's trying to kill everyone? Well. Everyone except Seth. So Alex breaks the hold in less time than I thought she would--not telling you EXACTLY how long it takes, though. 

After Alex goes back to being herself, we jump into ADVENTURE things. Or something like that. We go somewhere and we do some stuff, and I know I'm not making it sound fun but it was legit I-cannot-put-this-book-down material. As Jen writes. I loved it.

The romance in this one was sweetness. I'm not even on Team Aiden, but I know he and Alex need to be together. They're so wonderful together and I adore reading about them. 

The end to this book actually wasn't that terrible for my heart. I mean, compared to Deity, this one's easy. We're left with closure for the next book. Yes, I want to read that book like I want to eat some brownies right now. But I can live while I wait. Ya know?

Overall, Jennifer L. Armentrout has lived up to her awesome sauce status with this fourth installment in the Covenant series. I loved this book from beginning to end and am so excited to get into Sentinel! Definitely jump into this book if you've read the first three. Honestly, I can't even fathom why you're waiting. READ IT. Do yourself a favor. It's fantastic!

 Hi, people! So. I was originally going to review Apollyon, since I have yet to do that, but life did its funky thing and I have to hold off on my review until next week sometime. So for now, I'm posting TEASERS! 

Okay, okay. I know what you're thinking. "TEASERS, Jessica? We've all already read the aweosmeness that is this book. You're the only one who's been slow about this."

I know. For real, I know. BUT. This is a walk down memory lane, right? Remember after we finished Deity and we were all flipping out over that ending, how Alex was smiling and we were like AWW AIDEN and were like holy crap WTF is Jen going to do? And then in the months before we got our hands on this beauty, Jen was posting teasers.

Remember how those teasers made us feel? Excited, terrified, and then excited all over again--even more so. THAT is why I'm doing this.

Plus, it's cool to look back on what used to tease us and know that we know exactly what was going on in that scene--often, for me anyway, what I imagined turned out to be nothing like what I imagined it would be. 

So. TEASERS! 

(I'm grabbing these from Deity Island, because Vi has always been amazing at keeping up with what Jen teases us with. Oh, and these probably aren't ALL the teasers EVER. Just some.)

My feet touched the ground and I took a step forward—one, and then another. And Aiden didn’t move. He waited. It was in those eyes of his, the finality of this. He wouldn’t win, he couldn’t and he knew it. Aiden accepted it. As I reached him, the rain stopped and the clouds parted. The sun followed my footsteps. “Alex.” Aiden’s voice was broken. Like a cobra striking, I took Aiden’s legs out from under him and he was on his back before another breath could be taken. Straddling him, I placed my hands on his shoulders. The marks of the Apollyon glowed a vibrant blue and raced over my skin. I leaned in, placing my lips above his and the words that came out of my mouth were mine… but weren’t. “All moments end, Saint Delphi. And now yours has.” I pressed my lips to the corner of his and he flinched. “You are weak because you love.” Aiden stared up at me, unblinking. “To love is not weak. Love is the strongest thing there is.” My lips curved into a smile. Idiot.

His all-white eyes gleamed. “I’ve seen it all in battle. There is the way the body curls into itself when it wants death. There is the silent scream for release. There are the eyes, and they speak even when the tongue no longer works. And then there is the soul that rots so poorly when death is wanted but withheld that it carries a certain stench.” Ice shot through my veins, turning my blood to slush. At that moment I knew no matter how much I fought, this… this was going to suck.

“One down,” I said, turning around. “Who’s ne—?”
Thanatos tossed Marcus to the ground, deflected Solos’ attack, and turned on me in a nanosecond. It was pretty epic.
A bolt of white light flew from Thanatos’ hand and there wasn’t a single thing in this world that could move fast enough. Not even Seth, I was betting.
It hit me just below the chest and my legs collapsed from underneath me. Red-hot, searing pain sliced through my skin and my face smacked off the ground. I didn’t even feel it. There was nothing but the razing pain locking up my muscles.
God bolts sucked.
Aiden yelled my name, and then I thought I heard my name called again, but it was inside my head, loud, and so very angry… and it sounded like Seth.
Without any warning, the ground trembled under my twitching body. A flash of golden light cascaded through the clearing. Warmth stole over my body. Weakly, I lifted my head.
Two leather-clad legs stood before me.
“That is enough, Thanatos.” Apollo’s voice was calm, but it was that creepy, deadly calm I never wanted to be on the receiving end of.
“N-n-nice of y-you to s-show up,” I gasped.
“Shut up, Alex.” Apollo strode forward. A ray of light followed his steps.

Top Ten Most Intimidating Books

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted over at The Broke and the Bookish!

 

When I first saw today's topic, I was all like "HOW AM I EVER GOING TO THINK OF ENOUGH BOOKS?!?!?!!" Then I sat down and actually thought about it. My list was actually pretty hefty. You'd be amazed how many books intimidate me. I have learned that I am seriously afraid of books.

 

So, with that in mind, here is the list...

 

My Top Ten Most Intimidating Books:

 

Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins

 

I have had conversations with SEVERAL people about this. All of my favorite bookish people have told me that I must read this book, and yet I have not. Because of all of the books, this one, hands down, intimidates me the most. I am terrified to read it. There is so much hype and so many people telling me I'm going to love it, I am constantly worried that I won't. I mean, I already heart Kai (he was even interviewed on my blog in February!), but still. I. Am. So. Scared. AHHHHHHHHH. I really want to get to this one soon, though. Wendy Higgins is a lovely person, and the people I trust the most with bookish opinions are in love with this book, so it should turn out fine. I'm just a big baby.

 

Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

 

Are we supposed to include books we've already read? Oh well. I am, because before I read this book, I was actually worried I would not like it. I chuckle at that now, because this book is complete awesome sauce (as is Jen), but there was also loads of hype around this book and a long line of people assuring me I'd love it. Fun fact: When people tell me I'm going to love something, I usually do, but only after freaking out about it for a good while. But then I had this book in my hands, and I was soooooooo happy, and I had finished my current read, so I was like "Welp. Why not?" And started it. And now here I am, 13 months later, a big time JLA fangirl. Funny how life goes, eh?

 

Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

 

I've already read this one as well, but this was different than Obsidian. I wasn't worried because of hype before I read it. I just spent a good amount of time psyching myself out. Reading negative reviews on Goodreads, imagining all the ways this book could not be what I wanted it to be. But then I got bored, sat down, and read it, and I heart it. Adrian is as amazing as ever, y'all. <3

 

The Host by Stephenie Meyer

I haven't read it. I'm not even sure I will. But...darn it, that movie just came out (which I have not seen) and now I'm all kinds of curious about this freaking book. But it is MASSIVE, and apparently about aliens? Ha, and not the hot kind? I don't even know. I checked it out from the library once but never got to it because, again, it is ginormous. So now I stall. Maybe I'll read it, maybe I won't, but for now it intimidates me from afar.

 

Never Fade by Alexandra Bracken

 

I LOVELOVELOVED the first book, The Darkest Minds. One of my favorite books. And that is exactly where my fear comes in. The sequel. Holy crap, you guys. This is surely going to be highly emotional and heart-killing. And what if I don't like it as much as the first one? And my biggest fear of all--WHAT IF CHUBS DIES?!?! I mean, I obviously want things to work out with my boy Liam and his accent and that "darlin'" thing he does that sets my heart aflutter. But Chubs...I can't even go there. So yeah. This book scares me. It's on my Kindle as we speak, and I'll surely give in soon.

 

Apollyon by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Oops. I usually try to keep my lists to one book per author just because, but this book needs to be on the list. Why? Because...DON'T THROW ROCKS AT ME, Y'ALL...I'm still working on this one. I am such a sequel-phobe. Whenever it comes to continuing a series, I get scared. Plus, I read the first three books back to back, so then when I had to wait for this one, I actually settled down for enough time that I actually thought of things to worry about. Goodness knows what Jen's going to do this time. But I am halfway through and am actually actively reading this book now. So I should finish it soon and then let you all laugh with me at how I had no reason to be scared and we can all anticipate Sentinel together. WOOT!

 

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

 

I have read Maggie's Shiver trilogy (looooooved). I have read The Scorpio Races (I'm pretty sure I loooooved that even more). So now I sit here with this other book of hers in front of me, worrying that this one won't live up to the awesomness I had created in my mind that this book should be. I'm fairly certain I'm just being silly. I'm probably going to love this book to pieces. But still.

 

Just One Day by Gayle Forman

 

If I Stay was magnificent. Where She Went was as well. Adam Wilde is so...OHMYGOSH. So now there is another book by the author, and another boy, and I worry. Plus, said boy isn't in the whole book? Which worries me because as much as I try to be a well-rounded reader, romance is my thing. But then...I DID love the author's other two books...so I don't know. This book just conflicts me. PLUS, Just One Year's going to be in Willem's POV. If anything, I should read this book to be ready for that. But...gah! See? Books terrify the crap out of me.

 

Forever Too Far by Abbi Glines

I have a huuuuuuuuuuuuufe Rush Crush. I mean, come on. How could I not? But a) this is the last book in the trilogy and b) what could possibly happen for another book to be necessary? Seriously, Never Too Far seemed like it was THE END. But then there was this book and I was SO HAPPY! But now that I have it, I am so scared of being disappointed. I am also reluctant to end this series. There are the spinoffs, but stiiiiill. This one. Right here. Is going to end. Waaaaah.

 

The Death Cure by James Dashner

 

I'm not worried about what will happen at all. I'm not afraid of the outcome or what James Dashner is going to do to his characters. I mean, I'll care when I'm reading it, but that's not what keeps me from having enough confidence to read this book. I've had an ARC of this for FOREVER now. Since before I started my blog. (Got it for free at my library.) My reason here is I simply don't want the trilogy to end. BOOM. That's it. I picked up the first book forever ago not expecting at all to love it as much as I did. Then I moved on to the sequel and loved that as well. Now I just don't want to end this greatness. I will sometime. But until then, I am too much of a scaredy cat. ;)

Top 10 of 2012 ♥ Best Couples

  Today was actually a choice day, but since I'm ME, I had to choose the most obvious one. I mean, if you'd seen the list, you'd automatically think "Jessica's totally going to pick that one!" And, well, yeah. Some of this list I KNOW y'all are already predicting. But hey, some you might not. So yay!   Oh, wait. I might have picked the bad boy one, too. So yeah. But I would have only picked that for one boy, so...hehe. Either, way, my favorite couples I've read in 2012!   Honorable Mentions: Ethan & Emme Oh, they are so cute.   Maxon & America I love these two, but they aren't OFFICIAL as a couple enough yet for me to put them on the actual list. America needs to open her eyes and choose my boy.   Zach & Aura Zach...<3   10. Sam & Ana I luuurve Dossam. He's so nice.   9. Bennett & Anna They're so cuuuuute!   8. Dawson & Bethany I know what you're thinking. "I CAN'T BELIEVE A JLA COUPLE'S ONLY #8!" But we haven't seen all that much of these two. And I love them, but I had to take that into account. I'm glad to include them, though, especially after Opal. I love these two. Dawson's so sweet.   7. Trevor & Elliot OH, TREVOR. I heart that boy.   6. Nick & Mae    These books weren't released in 2012, but I did read them this year and I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. They're part of the reason I started my blog. First review  wrote, all that jazz. And Nick & Mae are two of my favorite characters. I adore them as a couple.   5. Perry & Aria Do I need to explain this? Have you READ this book? I cannot wait for Through the Ever Night.   4. Andrew & Camryn Andrew is so amazing and these two make one of my favorite couples ever. I hope to goodness there's a follow-up to this book. Hopefully a sequel? That would make me so happy!   3. Adrian & Sydney So I probably seem like a hypocrite after what I said about America & Maxon. But the difference here is that I've loved Adrian for so long now. Things are GOING to work out in the long run, I have no doubt. With America, though, there is a question. Which makes me mad. Plus, Sydney and Adrian clearly love each other. I can't wait for The Indigo Spell which, fun fact, comes out on my birthday! ;)   2. Aiden & Alex   It's no secret that I was Team Seth for a little while. But honestly, it is so obvious that Aiden and Alex are supposed to be together. Plus, Seth's not the best guy right now. NOT COOL, SETH. Nevertheless, I love these two. Can't wait for Apollyon!   1. Daemon & Katy    You can NOT tell me you're surprised right now. I love these books, and I love these two. I just finished Opal on Christmas Eve, and....ohmygod, guys. I can't even. This is my favorite couple ever. EVER. I can't see that changing anytime even remotely soon. Katy's so kickass, and DAEMON. That boy gets me. He does things to my heart, I tell you. My favorite. Favorite, favorite, favorite.   And those are my favorite couples. Top 10 of 2012 ♥ Best Book Covers

  So, I was able to keep it to 10 this time, BUT the actual ORDER was a little hard to choose. But this is roughly in order by how much I want to cuddle with these covers.   10. The Selection by Kiera Cass We all know that dress is gorgeous. I STILL happy dance whenever I see this on my shelf.   9. Rapture by Lauren Kate I think this might be my favorite cover of the whole Fallen series. It's super close to Passion, though. Either way, this book is so pretty.   8. Days of Blood & Starlight by Laini Taylor Ohhh, I love these covers. Amazing writing and amazing covers. I loved the red on this one. And it's just so beautiful.   7. The Secret of Ella & Micha by Jessica Sorensen I have not read this book yet. But I DO own a Kindle copy thanks to the wonderful Jessirae from Words, Pages, and Books. So *squee!!!* I plan to start reading this as soon as I can. I'm so excited. I love the red of this cover and the lip piercing... Let's be honest, guys, Micha's so freaking hot.   6. Incarnate by Jodi Meadows This book....LOOK at the cover.   5. Deity by Jennifer L. Armentrout This one's RED. In case you hadn't noticed, I love the color red. It's my favorite. Plus, all the Covenant covers are so pretty.   4. Elixir by Jennifer L. Armentrout I considered including this with Deity since it's a novella, but no. A cover is a cover. And this one is so amazing!   3. Onyx by Jennifer L. Armentrout I don't know why this book is only #3. This is especially where my numbers get jumbled, because I adore all these covers so much! But Pepe. And Sztella. Perfect Daemon and Katy. And the purple is so niiiiiice. I just love this book inside and out.   2. Pure by Jennifer L. Armentrout I LOVE the flower on this one. It's so gorgeously beautiful. And as much as I love the color red, the blue in this one...it's just perfect. And it completely GOES WITH THE BOOK. That means a lot to me. As pretty as a cover is, it bothers me when the pretty is random. So this book (and cover) is so great!   1. Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout As I said for Onyx, Pepe and Sztella are the perfect Daemon and Katy. And as I said for Pure, I love when covers mean something in the books. So this cover is PERFECT in both of those senses. This is another book I adore inside and out. Man, do I love these books.   And that is my list. There were TONS of beautiful covers this year. This is by no means all of them. But these ARE the ones I like the best when I try to think of my favorites.   What are some of your favorite covers from this year?   And...it's Christmas! 10. Time Between Us by Tamara Ireland Stone

I was so undecided on whether to put this book as #10 or Touching the Surface. In the end, though, you see what happened. This book was so cute. And fun. And if the two could have SHARED this spot, they would. But sadly, that's not how this works.

 

9. Take a Bow by Elizabeth Eulberg

This book was so cute and I flew right through it! I love Elizabeth Eulberg. This is the book that got me through TAKS last May. Love it.

 

8. The Selection by Kiera Cass

Team Maxon. That is all.

 

7. Flawed by Kate Avelynn

Honestly, this book should probably be in a better spot on this list, but this is where it ended up. This book is a masterpiece, though. I'm so glad I got the chance to read this. Just thinking about it STILL makes me cry.

Ohhhhh, this book. This book. Just thinking about it makes me smile. "A world of nevers under a never sky."~pg. 124 (I'm fairly positive that's the page. I love Perry and Roar. And I need Through the Ever Night ASAP.

 

2. The Covenant Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout

   

This is NOT cheating. This is me making room for books that aren't by JLA on this list. because honestly, if I didn't do this, there's be barely any room for any other books. If you WANT to take this down so there's only one book in this spot, take Deity & Elixir. The novella totally goes with the book. Otherwise, this is how it is. I can't help it. If you want to blame someone, blame Jen for writing such amazing books. And, urm, CAN I HAVE APOLLYON now? Please?

I don't think you realize just how much I adore everything JLA writes. Asking me to pick only a few for a list like this would be just wrong. So I choose them all. Plus, Katy's a book blogger. I think that's the biggest high five Jen could give us. And Daemon...he's just awesome. AWESOME, I TELL YOU. It's so hard to believe I just bumped into these books this year. Best bookish thing that's ever happened to me.

 

And...that's my top 10-ish. I apologize for my inability to choose just 10. Can you blame me, though? Have you READ these books? They're so great.
