Description from Goodreads:
Horses, mansions, tea parties, and lies are twenty-year-old Hannah Taylor’s life. To others, her family and her relationship with Eric is perfect. But she knows the truth. She lives it.

After a fire takes her grandma's life and kills her horse, Hannah's immaculate life spirals out of control. Her father disapproves of her decision to run her grandma’s ranch instead of focusing solely on learning the family business; Animal Control brings her Argus, a mistreated horse that she can't turn away even though she's not ready for another horse; and her boyfriend, Eric Bennett, a world famous polo player, becomes possessive and authoritarian. Despite her best efforts to disguise it, Hannah grows wary of him.

Then, Leonardo Fernandes struts onto the polo scene. A cocky rookie with a messy life of his own, he’s drawn to Hannah and isn’t afraid of showing it, even when Eric makes it clear she is his and he’ll do whatever it takes to keep it that way. Hannah suffers for Eric’s jealousy. The abuse only gets worse when Leo steals the title of best polo player in the world from Eric.

But the title isn’t enough for Leo. He wants Hannah too, and she can’t deny her attraction to him either. Somehow, she must find a way to break free from abusive Eric before he breaks every bone in her body.

What really intrigued me about this book was the horses. I thought it was a super cool premise to have the MC run a ranch and try to take care of poor Argus. And then on top of that, there was the abusive relationship. I was incredibly interested to see how it all fit together in one book. Whether it would feel random and scattered or what. The result, though, was actually way better than I could have imagined. This book was so good! Juliana Haygert did a great job of tying all those details of this story together into a book that I truly enjoyed reading.

As a character, Hannah didn't exactly WOW me. But she is also a respectable MC and I don't hate her. I don't even think she's that bad. She's okay, I'd say. And then Leo...oh goodness. THIS GUY. He is kind and caring and absolutely wonderful. I understand why Hannah was so into this dude. And their romance? Ah! So great. I do think their feelings started off rather quickly, but there is NOT insta-love. They do not by any means start throwing around the L word before it was acceptable for them.

Eric. At first, I actually liked Eric. He didn't seem like a bad guy, and he seemed like he cared. But then time went on and...things got huge. You'll discover that for yourself, but I'm just saying that I want to punch Eric in the face. Also, Juliana did a nice job of writing the relationship between Hannah and Eric. When reading about an abusive relationship like this, it's easy to get mad at the girl for sticking around. But in this book, it's all explained in Hannah's mind (and whatnot) so that...I get it. I HATE IT. But I also get it. That doesn't mean I agree 100% with how Hannah handled that problem, but still. It's nice to understand.

Argus! I love that horse. So cute!

I'd have to say my only real issue with this book was that I predicted what was going to happen. PREDICTABLE. I was completely pulled into the story by that point that I didn't get bored anyway, but predictability happened nevertheless.

The ending of this book is something I love and approve of. I also think that I would LOVE to see more Hannah and Leo. Together. Because they are all kinds of adorable.

Overall, I highly enjoyed reading Breaking the Reins and has a cool enough premise that it's definitely a worthwhile New Adult story to give a chance. Plus, you probably want to meet Leo. Ohmygosh, so hot. ;)

Description from Goodreads:
Thirty years in the future, a sinister New York City exists in permanent darkness.

A student at the secured NYU, nineteen-year-old Nadine has visions of Victor Gianni, an imaginary guy she has real feelings for. Afraid of being truly insane, she explains the visions away as simple daydreams, but she can no longer deny them when she bumps into Victor in real life. But this Victor doesn’t know her, and turns her away. After the encounter, Nadine’s visions change to those of eerie fates, gods she’s never heard of, demons with sharp claws they are not too timid to use … and instructions.

To discover if she’s losing her mind, Nadine follows the vague directions—with the real, rude and reluctant Victor—leading to a man who knows it all: Nadine can restore an ancient creed by unveiling the clues on her visions, and bring sunlight and peace to the world again. But that’s only if the demons and the other evil forces behind the darkness don’t stop her first.
I took one look at this book and was falling all over myself to read it. Why? Well, let's list the reasons, shall we?

- New Adult Paranormal Romance. New Adult. We all know how much I heart that genre, yes? And paranormal romance. I'm usually cool with that.

- Do you SEE that cover? Ahhh, so gorgeous.

- Victor! I wanted to learn about this booooy. Can you blame me? He sounded so interesting in the description.

- Fates, gods, and demons. I wanted to KNOOOOOW, you know?

And now I've read the book. I finally sat my booty down and made my way all the way through this book. And...well, I'm not disappointed. But I'm not especially slap happy, either. This book was good. But it wasn't OMGOMG YAY.

But I still think it is worth reading.

Why? WHY would I tell you that after it did not meet my expectations?

Well, I'll tell you why, booklover. Juliana's writing? Was great. I really liked it. And Micah? (A character I'll tell you about later.) He was fabulous. The second half of this book? Had me flipping pages like mad. And the ENDING?! Goodness, gracious, people. WHERE is book 2 when I need it? Gah.

Now, that means that this book is not perfect. So what? The first half of this book was sort of...meh for me. So what? Victor didn't make my insides glow like I thought he would. So what? Because everything I DIDN'T like about this book was made up for with something I liked. Heck, my list of things I did not like is overshadowed by the list of things I DID like.

Character Rundown:
Nadine: Ooooh, girl. I'm not going to lie to you--I was not really a fan. She just seemed so...naive to me. She's not ALL bad, but she's not my favorite protag ever. But her gift(s)? Awesome. Seriously.

Victor: This boy is not mine. There is Victor from her Visions and Victor is Nadine's real life and...I think I might have liked Vision Victor if we'd gotten more time with him. But real life Victor? Got on my nerves. He had a few sweet moments, I'll give him that, but he didn't wow me like I thought he would.

Micah: Ahhh, ACCENT! Yeah, Micah's my boy here. He uses the word "darling", which always makes me laugh, and...just, goodness, y'all. When Nadine was all fawning over Victor (who for some reason I keep wanting to call Vincent...gah! I need If I Should Die already!)...anyway....Nadine was fawning over Victor, and I was sitting there like "WHEN ARE WE GOING TO SEE MY BOY AGAIN?!?! BRING. HIM. BACK." So yeah. Micah made me smile and laugh and he is the best character in this book, in my opinion.

Plot. This was actually pretty solid. Another good thing about this book. It was kind of slow for me at the beginning, but about halfway through, things just picked up and I was INTO this book. There is a plot twist. I didn't see it coming. Though, once it was starting to be revealed, I DID guess the rest of it before we were told. But that's not too bad. At least I didn't guess at the beginning. I guessed DURING the big reveal.

Romantic/Sweet Things. We have Vision Victor, Real Victor, and Micah. All of them have their moments. Vision Victor's are short lived because...well, you'll see when you read the book! Real Victor...those sweet moments were almost the only moments I really liked him. But I'm okay with that. And Micah. Ahhhh, his were my favorite. "Darling." The only person who can one-up him with the darking thing right now is Liam from The Darkest Minds (AKA my favorite book EVER) and his use of the word "darlin'." Micah relieved stress with his moments. I loved it.

The ending. It's not really a cliffhanger, but I was left with a feeling of "WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO NOW?!?!" I want to read that second book. I need to find out...things. Things that I will not tell you because I refuse to spoil, but OMG more Micah pleasepleaseplease. Okay? OKAY.

Overall, Destiny Gift is not the perfect book. It has flaws. But in the end, it is a solid story with very many redeeming qualities that will leave you making grabby hands for book 2. Goodness knows I am.
