The title of this book IS this book. You probably don't understand that if you haven't read the book, but it's true. Reflection was utterly heartbreaking yet amazingly beautiful.

 

This book may be beautiful, but it took a while to actually hold my attention. I was almost halfway through the book when I started to truly enjoy it. Luckily, the second half made up for the lacking of the first half. The book shifts from one that drags to one that was so heart warming.

 

Character Rundown:

Heather: This girl was so cute, but I didn't like how confused she was. I understand the reason she was confused, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. I thought it was endearing how she always wanted to fix things, though. And when she was around Nick...well, that was nice.

 

Nick: He's my boy, no doubt about it. He's all mysterious and bothered me so much in the beginning, but once he and Heather got closer, I warmed up to him a bunch. Love this boy. I wish he'd be more open, though. And the end with him...I can't say any more about it but I am pouting.

 

Creed: We don't see much of him, but from what we do see, he is so clearly the sweetheart in this book. I hope for the best for him, although I prefer Nick. This said, I'd still totally be Creed's best friend!

 

Other characters: Honestly, the other characters weren't that important, therefore I don't really have anything to say about them. This book was pretty much the story of Heather & Nick with tiny amounts of Creed thrown in. I'm okay with that, but it doesn't bode well for the "other characters" section of this review ;)

 

The plot. I had no idea where the plot was going for a big chunk of this book. Then I realized what was happening and was like "Oh, please, NOOOOO!" And then there was a twist. That is all I'm going to say.

 

The romance. Like everything else, this didn't really pick up until about halfway through the book. Still, when it shows up, it is THERE. It was so sweet! Heather and Nick are the absolute cutest couple. I want things to work out for them so bad!

 

The ending. Don't even get me started. My heart is broken.

 

Overall, I want to read the next book so I can see what happens to these characters! Which means that this book was good, because otherwise I wouldn't waste my time on the sequel. Though it takes a bit to make it through the first half, you may just end up enjoying it even though you may consider putting it down (like I did). Give it a full chance. Nick'll probably make you smile if you do. :)

 

 

Excerpt:

And then all of a sudden Nick got up. While my brain was determining where he
was going and if I’d gone too far, my eyes studied his physique as it strolled away from
me. His t-shirt clung to the evident muscles of his upper back, hanging flawlessly in the
hollow down to his waist. I’d never noticed something like that. To my eye’s dismay
he hunched behind the counter. I was fascinated and confused by the draw I felt to him
and the alien emotions pulling inside my stomach. Emotions I was certain I’d never
processed before.

A few seconds later his eyes fastened on me. “Garbage?”

“What? Oh.” I stood, laughing sheepishly. “Yeah. I don’t have one. I mean,
I need to get one.” I placed my clumsy hands on my hips and then glanced behind me
because I didn’t know where else to look.

Visually I followed him as he wadded the white paper in his hand, snatched his
keys off the counter, and strolled toward me. But because my eyes were nervously stiff
I didn’t really see him. I twisted Creed’s ring around my finger; then my hand scratched
the back of my neck; and then my foot propped behind me on its tiptoe and I almost lost
my balance.

Say something! He’s leaving!

“You’re leaving already and I haven’t even finished my sandwich.” I scrunched
my nose at what came out. “Not that I want you to stay or anything. I mean, it’s your
choice to stay or leave but—”

His nearness cut me off. In the course of my bird-brained comments, he had been
advancing toward me, finally stopping uncomfortably close to me. His lips were curved
in a wicked grin and I swallowed with a bashfulness I rarely felt.

To my utter shock, a hot finger lifted my chin and our faces came even closer.

Too close.

Breathe, Heather.

“Would you like that, if I stayed?”

My eyes dropped from his, but they only made it to his chest since he was holding
my head in place.

“Actually, I have so much to do today,” I said, trying my best to sound bored.

But my voice held a nervous quiver that most likely made him smile more.

Though he dropped his hand from my face, he didn’t back away and his deep
voice rumbled through my head again. “Some of us attend class.”

My nose scrunched. Had I missed class this morning? Before I had time to
pinpoint what day it was, he was gone.

 

Aww, Nick! Hehe.

My head snapped up and my cheeks burned. “Wha…?!” Picture of eloquence, that’s me.

On her way to another table, Sophia passed behind me. “Give him your number.”

“My what? Oh! My number! I have a number!” I scribbled it on my order pad and tore off the page to hand to him.

His chin jerked up slightly. “Who do I ask for when I call?”

I agreed to go on a date with a guy before I even knew his name, or told him mine. Please, don’t tell my mother.

“Celeste.” I chewed on my lower lip and I brushed a loose strand of hair behind my ear.

About Stacey Rourke: Writing is something I have always done. I can remember in elementary school creating stories that I would stand up and read aloud to my classmates…whether they liked it or not. As I grew older I didn’t flaunt my writing as freely. It became something I did just for me to vent my teenage angst, or chronicle my journey to adulthood. I never thought about becoming a writer because that title prompted the visual of a grey-haired man in a tweed smoking jacket with suede elbow patches, slaving over an old fashion typewriter while puffing away on a pipe. No way was that stuffy kind of life for me. (Plus tweed is itchy.) Instead I wanted to be in the spotlight! I wanted to be–pause for dramatic effect–an actress! I gave it my best shot, too. Got about as far as any aspiring actress can get in Flint, Michigan. Which is exactly no where. But I did get two great things out of my time delving into the theatrical world; I gained the ability to act out the scenes I write to make sure they’re believable (yes, I really do that and no, you can’t watch) and I met my amazing husband. My theater ambitions behind me, I decided to do the “mature,” “grown up” thing and went back to college. As I worked toward my Bachelor’s degree in marketing I did a lot of writing. Essays, research papers, PowerPoint presentations. All of it mandatory, none of it what I would ever call fun. Even then, becoming a writer never entered my mind. No, then I was going to be a business tycoon…or somethin’. Truth be told, I never picked writing. It picked me. During my time as a stay at home mom I needed an outlet to give me a mental break from diapers, formula and midnight feedings. That’s when my hands found their way back to the keyboard. Story ideas began coming at such an incessant rate that my rapidly clicking fingers couldn’t keep up. Post-It notes and scrapes of paper with story ideas decorated every inch of our house. In mid-conversation with my husband I would dart off to jot down things that would come to me. Sweet guy my hubby is, he would just shake his head at my obvious rudeness and hold my place in the conversation. My first book was completed for an entire year before I told anyone about it. I outed myself as an author and then sent out my first round of query letters to literary agents. Surely, it would be picked up immediately and become an overnight success! Yeah, not so much. For two years I got rejection, after rejection, after rejection, after rejection…you get the idea. Thankfully with the ever increasing pile of rejections came feedback. I digested all the suggestions and applied the usable ones to my manuscript. Little by little, the rough edges were chipped away and the diamond shone through. The work paid off when I received an email from a publisher offering me a contract on The Conduit. It’s been a long road, and it ain’t over yet. But now, at thirty-mumble, mumble years old I finally know what I wanna be when I grow up–-a writer.

I've had my eye on For Darkness Shows the Stars for a while now. I'd seen so many stellar reviews and truly thought I'd enjoy this book. Sadly, I was somewhat disappointed by this book.

I am not saying that I dislike this book. It was actually very well written and has a fascinating premise, which was executed beautifully. My biggest issue with this book was the messed up romance. I haven't read Pursuasion so I assume my issue isn't even the author's fault, but that doesn't change the fact that I was not pleased with it. As far as Jane Austen goes, I've read some of her writing, and some of it I adored while some of it I did not. Apparently Pursuasion would be one of those that I didn't very much like. And that's fine. We all can't like everything, right?

Character Rundown:
Elliot: Funny how I've read two books with girls named Elliot this month. Before now, I've never even heard of a girl named Elliot. I think I like it. Now, THIS Elliot. She's strong-willed, and even just strong in general. I like that. I don't really have any negative feelings toward her. She had her faults, of course, as all of us do, but I see nothing wrong with the things she did, overall. Go, Elliot!

Kai: I don't care what this boy says, I refuse to call him Malakai, even though I love that name. You can't just be Kai forever and then decide one day to be like "I'm not Kai, I'm Malakai." Not cool. I didn't swoon much over him until way too close to the end for my happiness. I don't get this guy at all. He showed something around zero emotion for Elliot until the last 25ish percent of the book. I repeat: not cool. At the end, though, I admit Kai did make me sigh. (hehe)

Other characters: Ro was sweet. That girl got to me. The rest of the characters, too...I didn't have any issues with them, really. They were who they were and I accepted it. Other than Ro, none of them really excited me much.

The plot. Let's ignore the romance for a moment. The plot was amazing. I truly enjoyed reading about Elliot and running the estate and even learning about...about the special project. These aspects of the story were very much enjoyable and are all reasons why you should give this book a try.

And...the romance. There were tiny sweet moments, mostly within the letters between Kai and Elliot that warmed my heart. Not as many as I would have liked, though. And then Kai was full of zero good emotions toward Elliot for too big a chunk of time. I did not like this. There ARE, however, some nice romantic-like things around the end.

The ending. The ending made me smile. You know all the whining I've done so far about the "messed up romance"? Well, there is nothing messed up about this ending.

Overall, though I was somewhat disappointed, I hear there's going to be a sequel and I do plan on reading it. Diana Peterfreund is clearly a brilliant writer and I'd love to read more from her. Don't give up on this book just because Kai and Elliot aren't falling over each other throughout the whole thing. There really ARE lots of good things that make up for it within the story, if you give it a chance.

Author Interview ♥ Victoria Scott

Today, I'm lucky enough to be interviewing the author of The Collector (aka the book I've been obsessing over and practically owns my left sidebar),

1. Let's get right to the chase, because I honestly cannot help myself--Dante. How in the world did you come up with such an amazingly amazing character?

VS-Oh, honey, I didn't come up with him. I just ran into him. Dante is flesh and blood. I'm just telling his story in first person because I think people will want to read it. But D-Dub? He's as real as they come. ;)

2. Okay, now a little less to the chase, since there is never any rhyme or reason to pretty much anything I do--What was it like writing Dante's story?

VS-It was fantastic. I love getting to "be" Dante. His confidence and swagger is infectious.

 

Yes. Yes it is.

 

3. I am personally a huge fan of bloggers, for obvious reasons. What has your experience with bloggers been like? Any particular ones you just want to hug?

VS-OMFG, I LOVE bloggers. They are the backbone of the publishing industry. Here's the thing, there are so many other activities people can be doing today: watching TV, surfing the web, texting, sharing videos, playing video games. But bloggers keep books relevant. They keep them HOT. Thank sweet Jesus for bloggers. Seriously. Oh, and I want to hug them all. Every single last one of them.

 

*squee!* I love authors who love bloggers. It gives me a warm tingly feeling inside.

 

4. So you read and you write, we all know this, but what else do you do? What kind of fun stuff (or not-fun stuff) occupies you time?

VS-Aww, what a nice question. I dig hanging out with my friends, interior design, gardening, watching indie films, and trying new hole-in-the-wall restaurants.

 

5. Okay, now let's go back to Dante--remember, I can't help myself. I'm no responsible for my actions when Dante is involved. Dante. What is something about Dante that you think we should know?

VS- I'd say that although Dante is amazingly confident, he has a few demons of his own (no pun intended...since he's a demon himself...get it?). As you read the book, you'll learn about some of his flaws and insecurities, and how he truly needs someone to free him of his one-dimensional thinking.

 

I, for one, cannot wait to learn EVERYTHING about this hot book boy.

 

6. You're an author (man, I'm amazing at stating the obvious today). I'm sure you have some author friends. Can you tell us about some of them? I bet they're awesome.

VS-There's so many great author peeps I've been privileged to know. I'll name a few: Mary Lindsay, Lindsay Cummings, Trisha Wolfe, Julie Murphy. I'll stop there and take the wrath that will surely come for not mentioning everyone. *Waves! Love you guys*

7. List your top five favorite bands/musicians/people that make music, please.

VS-I'm a hard rock girl, which they don't do much of anymore, so a lot of these are throw back: Rob Zombie, Korn, Deftones, Tool, and Powerman 5000.

 

8. And now your top five favorite books. Please. :)

VS-Fun! I'll say THE GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS, HARRY POTTER, UNDER THE NEVER SKY, BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY, and THIS IS NOT A TEST.

 

I adore UNDER THE NEVER SKY!! And Victoria Rossi is so friendly!

 

9. Okay, last question: what can you tell us about THE COLLECTOR that will get us seriously pumped about its release in March (which, ha, fun fact! is one month after my birthday. Just FYI. Hehe)?

VS-Ooh, that's hard. I'll say this: it's not your typical paranormal romance. The girl is NOT perfect, far from it, and I really wanted it that way. I didn't want to write another romance where both characters are STUNNING. We'll see what people think about this. :)

 

Awwww, I'm already incredibly excited to meet these characters! Especially Dante. Because he is mine. That is all. ;)

I have been waiting for this book for a very, very long time. It was my first ever Waiting on Wednesday, and this author was one of the first I've ever interviewed. This said, it's to be expected that I would have high expectations. When you wait so long for something, you have to build it up in your mind throughout the meantime, right? So now I am so completely excited to say that this book EXCEEDED my expectations. It was just that amazing.

Beginning the book, everything was confusing. I didn't understand what was happening at all. Normally, this is the downfall of some books for me. They start off making zero sense to me, and then proceed to mix up my brain even more as the story thickens. But Touching the Surface fixed itself up as I got more into the story, shaping up to be an undeniably breathtaking debut.

Character Rundown:
Elliot: Elliot is one of those characters that I love and dislike at the same time. She is very selfish, but I give her respect for at least noticing this and then trying to change that. I also admired her strong will. It got somewhat battered throughout the story, but ti never really left and I liked to see it. Of course, there were little Elliot quirks that made me want to slap her, but overall, she wasn't too bad.

Oliver: This boy is such a sweetheart. I've come to notice that there is usually at least one sweetheart in every book I read. Ollie is most definitely it in this book. I was Team Trevor, but I felt right along with this boy throughout the whole story, too. I want to give him the biggest hug!

Trevor: So. Trevor. I'm on his team. I admit, he was a huge jerk in the beginning. And I mean a jerk with zero redeemable qualities at all, except his looks--so he wasn't another Daemon Black winning me over with his jerkish charm. No, Trevor was despicable for a good chunk of time. But then he transformed into a character I now love with all my heart, and that turn around is what got me. I was on his team from the beginning--because I'm a team masochist, obviously, and because I had hope for him--but I was completely stuck in him after he changed.

Other Characters: I do not like Julia. I see her side and understand her issues, but she made a big mess of things that hurt people more than she helped them and I don't like that. So Julia is not in my book of lovable characters. Mel: Mel is great. I'd love to have her as my guide, that's for sure. David: I have mixed feelings about him. Mostly, I just have sympathy. Still, he got on my nerves quite a bit. Amd Freddie. He's an amazing friend. He truly is.

The plot. This book took me through the wringer. I felt so much while reading this book, the emotions are just so raw and Kimberly does an amazing job of helping us feel them. I honesly had to take little breaks sometimes because my heart hurt so much. I got teary in some parts, too. One thing is for absolute sure, though--this book will not do what you expect. And that's all I'm going to say, so I don't spoil.

Sweetness. Oliver and Trevor create sweet moments throughout the book. There were inst-connections all over the place, but this is one of those books where it's done in the right way so that I enjoy it. A lot. Oliver is a sweetheart, and Trevor...ah, Trevor. Give him a chance. That's all I have to say.

The ending. Oh, this ending. I have no complaints. It left me with a nice feeling, though it was somewhat bittersweet. I think the bittersweet was because of the unknown, though, and not the actual ending itself. Either way, beautiful. So beautiful.

Overall, Touching the Surface is a gorgeous and mesmirizing debut by Kimberly Sabatini. I strongly, STRONGLY urge you to pick this one up. And now I cannot wait to see what comes next from Kimberly!
