GUNS: The Spencer Book (Rook and Ronin Spinoff)Guns by J.A. Huss
Release Date: March 31, 2014
Series: Rook and Ronin Spinoff
Buy It: Amazon | B&N

Description from Goodreads:
THIS IS NOT A STANDALONE BOOK. YOU MUST READ ALL THE OTHER BOOKS IN THIS SERIES FIRST.

ALL. OF. THEM.**

Spencer Shrike is a man with a plan. Get in. Get out. Move on. He loves Ron the Bomb, and her safety is the only thing on his mind these days. But life is a tricky bastard, and conning criminals for the better part of ten years brings its own set of problems. Sure, Rook lied her way out of a sticky situation, covering for crimes Ronin, Ford, and Spencer committed, and getting them all off scot-free in the process.

But not everyone is buying Rook’s story, and Spencer is desperate to figure out who’s in town setting them up for a fall.

Veronica the Bombshell Vaughn has put up with Spencer Shrike’s shit for years and where has it gotten her? A big fat nowhere. No ring, no house, no kids, and no promises. In fact, Spencer is worse than ever—completely distant and moody. She’s done sitting at home, pining over a man she can’t have.

But she’s not opposed to fighting for him.

Ron the Bomb fights hard and she fights dirty, so she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get Spencer’s attention.

But now there’s another man in town with his eye on her. He’s got secrets too, but unlike Spencer, Bobby Mansi is more than willing to let Veronica in on them.

The entire Rook and Ronin series comes full circle. Every con, every lie, and every skeleton in the closet is back for one final shot at vengeance and the only way to set it right… is to get out the guns.

VERONICA
Spencer leans into my neck once the moan subsides. “Do I make you hot?”
I try to regain some semblance of control, but I totally fail. So my words betray every empty thought in my head when I whisper, “I’m an insatiable inferno.”
His large hands stroke my calf, then he grabs my foot and pushes it until my knee bends. He does the same thing to my other foot, and then grabs my panties and says, “Lift, please.”
I swallow and lift.
His fingertips drag down my outer thighs this time, then tickle that little dent behind my knees as he hooks the panties over my kneecaps and lets them drop to the ground on top of my feet.
I wait for him to finish what he started and remove the panties from my ankles, but he doesn’t. He leaves them there, a reminder that he just stripped them off me.
God, that makes me wet for some reason.
His hands reach around to my bra clasp, and then before I can even formulate how I might feel about being stripped of my last bit of clothing, my breasts fall free and he licks his lips. He pulls the lacy pink bra down my arms and I slip my hands out before he makes me keep it on. I’m still thinking about the panties around my ankles. Something about that is just so… so… sexual.
I wait.
He waits.
“Now what?” I ask.
“What do you want to do now?” he counters.
I reach down and slip the panties over my feet and then set them on top of the small pile of clothes.
“And now you’re ready,” he whispers.
“What am I ready for?”
He gets up from the grass, grabs my clothes, places them in the office, then drags his airbrush equipment over to the spot where I’m sitting on the grass. “Now, I fuck you with paint.”
Holy shit. He just said that.
I’m so turned on, I’m starting to throb. He walks back over to the cart, tests the flow of paint on a piece of cardboard, and then turns to me. “You will never forget this day, Veronica Vaughn. For the rest of your life, whenever someone asks you what the best day of your life was, this will be in your top three.”
“What about the other two?” I ask.
“We haven’t made those memories yet, Bomb. But we will.”

Series: Rook & Ronin #2

Description from Goodreads:
TRAGIC is over and Rook is ready for the future—Spencer Shrike and the STURGIS contract!

It’s three months of body art modeling! That means three months of Spencer Shrike’s paintbrush all over her body, three months in front of Antoine’s camera, and three months of twenty-four hour filming for Spencer’s Biker Channel reality show.

Wait a minute…what reality show? Maybe she should’ve read that STURGIS contract a little closer? ;)

Sure, Rook’s bank account is almost overflowing, but Ronin is angry, Clare is trying to escape rehab, Antoine is a worried mess, and Elise is just trying to hold everyone together. Her new family is about to fall apart before she even gets the chance to enjoy them.

Add in a mysterious man from her past, a road trip to the famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and a final show in front of the entire world where all her goods are on display, and you’ve got Manic—a new adult contemporary romance that will definitely make your summer sizzle!

This book made me happy. I actually think I may like it more than I liked the first book. I'm not POSITIVE, but it's a possibility. In this book, there are some new characters, and I enjoyed them. Very much. But I'll explain that more in a minute.

In this sequel, we also learned more about Rook's past, and we got more into the world that Ronin is from. And the sweetness. There was sweetness. (I mean, of course. With Ronin around, how could it be anything but?)

Character Rundown:
Rook: Rook has always been a strong character--she's big on protecting herself. She was still like that in this one, but she was also learning to open up and let people help her, which I really liked. She's still not my favorite person ever, but I definitely liked her better in this one.

Ronin: Oh, Ronin. I will forever crush on this book boy. Ronin was still Ronin in this book, through and through. Actually, he was kind of better in this one. Since he's WITH Rook this time, and he gets all protective and I found that amusing and cute. So, yeah. I still heart this boy.

Spencer & Ford: These were new characters (well, for the most part), and I loved them! Especially Ford. He is mine. I am looking forward to seeing them more in the third book!

Plot. I was not a fan of the times Ronin was not there, but then there WAS Spencer and Ford around to keep things interesting. Also, the THINGS that happen in this book...I enjoyed them. And...HOW, exactly, am I supposed to discuss this without spoiling? I am seriously having trouble with this right now, grrrrr. *sigh*

Romance. Seeing as Rook & Ronin are actually TOGETHER in this book, I liked this aspect more this time around. Plus, Ronin makes me smile. And then there's the fact that this relationship was already started in book 1, so it didn't seem like such a stretch that they would be so close now, since their relationship seemed to develop fast in the first book. So I APPROVE.

The ending. Awwwww. Also, can I have Panic now? Please?

Overall, I very much enjoyed Manic and think it is very possible that I liked it better than the first book. That said, if you liked Tragic, you should definitely pick up Manic. I think it will make you happy. :)

About the Author
J. A. Huss likes to write new adult books that make you think and keep you guessing. Her favorite genre to read is space opera, but since practically no one reads those books, she writes new adult science fiction, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, urban fantasy, and books about Junco (who refuses to be saddled with a label).

She has an undergraduate degree in horses, (yes, really–Thank you, Colorado State University) and a master’s degree in forensic toxicology from the University of Florida. She used to have a job driving around Colorado doing pretty much nothing but shooting the breeze with farmers, but now she just writes, runs the New Adult Addiction and Clean Teen Reads Book Blogs, and runs an online science classroom for homeschoolers.

Description from Goodreads:
Rook Walsh is TRAGIC

Because life so far – just sucks. Some girls get parents. Rook got the foster care system. Some girls get Prince Charming. Rook got an abusive frog. Some girls get lucky…

Rook got a second chance.

And she took it. Because when fate throws you a bone – you grab it with both hands and run.

Antoine Chaput knows the minute he spies Rook in his photography studio that she’s got The Look. The dark and desperate look he must have to land the exclusive TRAGIC media contract.

Rook is paired up with top model, Ronin, and he’s everything her abusive ex-boyfriend wasn’t. Patient, gentle, happy, attentive, and sexy! He knows exactly what to do to make Rook blush for Antoine’s camera.

Rook’s luck changes in an instant and suddenly she’s the darling of the modeling world. It’s a dream job to go with a dream guy and all she has to do is look pretty and follow directions. But there’s always a price to pay – and Rook is about to get the bill.

New Adult Contemporary Romance

After seeing some things about this book, I was soooooooooooo excited to start reading it. Seriously, I was so excited for some Rook & Ronin hotness. They're models! I must say, I had a specific picture in my mind about this couple (like who they look like) as I read. And THAT was fantastic. I could SEE this whole book. And it was great!

Now, there were some things that made me uneasy as I was reading. Not really out of my comfort zone, just skirting around things I personally do not like. But then, all was well and I was in love with Rook & Ronin again.

Character Rundown:
Rook: I liked her attitude and her strength. I did not like her...greed, I guess. Then again, I understand it. Man do I ever understand what Rook wants and why she wants it. I guess I just didn't like how close-minded she was BECAUSE of her plan. She wasn't a bad character, though. I would have acted just like her in some situations.

Ronin: Hello, hot boy. I like him. A lot. I might even love him. I'm not sure yet, though. I'll figure it out next book. There were some things about Ronin that I did not like at all, at first. As we learned more about him, then ultimately learned IT ALL, I felt better and better about him. Sometimes, though, I wanted to slap him across his pretty boy face. BOOM. But overall, I heart this boy. <3

Plot. I love Rook's half of this story 100%. It was solid, it was something I can understand and relate to, and it was entertaining. Ronin's half of the story was good, too, but it got on my nerves more because I didn't know what I needed to know. Just...I can't explain it to you. I liked being in Ronin's POV better, but I liked Rook's story better. That's just how it was.

Yes. This book is dual POV. I happy-danced my face off when I found out.

Ronin & Rook. Whoa. Weird that way, isn't it? But I like to put the guy first... Anyway. These two. Their relationship started up REALLY fast. I mean, it wasn't insta-love, but it all felt fast. They did slow things down, though. And there IS NOT insta-love. They aren't declaring undying love within a week of meeting each other. They just really like each other. And gosh darn it, they are so adorable! In a smexy way, of course ;)

The ending. This is the part that made me feel all okay again. So if you're feeling all funky reading this book, stick it out! And I am DEFINITELY going to read the next book. I feel very grabby hands about it right now, actually...

Overall, Tragic is a smexy New Adult story that had me smiling from ear to ear before I even finished the third chapter. It has it's bothersome moments, but in the end it is totally worth all the spazziness it makes you (made me) feel. Should you read it? GOODNESS YES. You need to meet Ronin, y'all. NEED TO.
