Description from Goodreads:
Thirty years in the future, a sinister New York City exists in permanent darkness.

A student at the secured NYU, nineteen-year-old Nadine has visions of Victor Gianni, an imaginary guy she has real feelings for. Afraid of being truly insane, she explains the visions away as simple daydreams, but she can no longer deny them when she bumps into Victor in real life. But this Victor doesn’t know her, and turns her away. After the encounter, Nadine’s visions change to those of eerie fates, gods she’s never heard of, demons with sharp claws they are not too timid to use … and instructions.

To discover if she’s losing her mind, Nadine follows the vague directions—with the real, rude and reluctant Victor—leading to a man who knows it all: Nadine can restore an ancient creed by unveiling the clues on her visions, and bring sunlight and peace to the world again. But that’s only if the demons and the other evil forces behind the darkness don’t stop her first.
I took one look at this book and was falling all over myself to read it. Why? Well, let's list the reasons, shall we?

- New Adult Paranormal Romance. New Adult. We all know how much I heart that genre, yes? And paranormal romance. I'm usually cool with that.

- Do you SEE that cover? Ahhh, so gorgeous.

- Victor! I wanted to learn about this booooy. Can you blame me? He sounded so interesting in the description.

- Fates, gods, and demons. I wanted to KNOOOOOW, you know?

And now I've read the book. I finally sat my booty down and made my way all the way through this book. And...well, I'm not disappointed. But I'm not especially slap happy, either. This book was good. But it wasn't OMGOMG YAY.

But I still think it is worth reading.

Why? WHY would I tell you that after it did not meet my expectations?

Well, I'll tell you why, booklover. Juliana's writing? Was great. I really liked it. And Micah? (A character I'll tell you about later.) He was fabulous. The second half of this book? Had me flipping pages like mad. And the ENDING?! Goodness, gracious, people. WHERE is book 2 when I need it? Gah.

Now, that means that this book is not perfect. So what? The first half of this book was sort of...meh for me. So what? Victor didn't make my insides glow like I thought he would. So what? Because everything I DIDN'T like about this book was made up for with something I liked. Heck, my list of things I did not like is overshadowed by the list of things I DID like.

Character Rundown:
Nadine: Ooooh, girl. I'm not going to lie to you--I was not really a fan. She just seemed so...naive to me. She's not ALL bad, but she's not my favorite protag ever. But her gift(s)? Awesome. Seriously.

Victor: This boy is not mine. There is Victor from her Visions and Victor is Nadine's real life and...I think I might have liked Vision Victor if we'd gotten more time with him. But real life Victor? Got on my nerves. He had a few sweet moments, I'll give him that, but he didn't wow me like I thought he would.

Micah: Ahhh, ACCENT! Yeah, Micah's my boy here. He uses the word "darling", which always makes me laugh, and...just, goodness, y'all. When Nadine was all fawning over Victor (who for some reason I keep wanting to call Vincent...gah! I need If I Should Die already!)...anyway....Nadine was fawning over Victor, and I was sitting there like "WHEN ARE WE GOING TO SEE MY BOY AGAIN?!?! BRING. HIM. BACK." So yeah. Micah made me smile and laugh and he is the best character in this book, in my opinion.

Plot. This was actually pretty solid. Another good thing about this book. It was kind of slow for me at the beginning, but about halfway through, things just picked up and I was INTO this book. There is a plot twist. I didn't see it coming. Though, once it was starting to be revealed, I DID guess the rest of it before we were told. But that's not too bad. At least I didn't guess at the beginning. I guessed DURING the big reveal.

Romantic/Sweet Things. We have Vision Victor, Real Victor, and Micah. All of them have their moments. Vision Victor's are short lived because...well, you'll see when you read the book! Real Victor...those sweet moments were almost the only moments I really liked him. But I'm okay with that. And Micah. Ahhhh, his were my favorite. "Darling." The only person who can one-up him with the darking thing right now is Liam from The Darkest Minds (AKA my favorite book EVER) and his use of the word "darlin'." Micah relieved stress with his moments. I loved it.

The ending. It's not really a cliffhanger, but I was left with a feeling of "WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO NOW?!?!" I want to read that second book. I need to find out...things. Things that I will not tell you because I refuse to spoil, but OMG more Micah pleasepleaseplease. Okay? OKAY.

Overall, Destiny Gift is not the perfect book. It has flaws. But in the end, it is a solid story with very many redeeming qualities that will leave you making grabby hands for book 2. Goodness knows I am.

  1. You're going to have to fight me for Micah! lol I seriously wanted to smack Nadine for not getting into him more. Thing is I think she could be really good for him and make a kind of balance but I have my ideas as to where everything is going and it's not that way... Great review and I share many of your thoughts :D

  3. Well, Miccah sounds like a great guy and I love it when guys use the word "darlin'" . Although , a very little percentage of them use it at all.
Anyway, this cover is gorgeous and the idea is interesting. I cannot wait to read it

  4. Lol your review made me smile. I'm glad that, even though you had issues with it, you were able to enjoy it.
I assure you book 2 will be more fast-paced, like the second half of Destiny Gift, or even more ;) Plus, there will be more Micah, Victor and more mythology ;)

  5. I'd like to check this one out! I have really been wanting to get into New Adult. But Contemporaries are NOT my thing. I keep hoping for more Paranormal NA stories!
